GUILLAUME LEUNENS, FLEMISH ARTIST PAINTER

Leunens, or The Poetry of Metal (suite)

... The present exhibition shows the public only one facet of his creative power: the so-called metallic monotypes...

These monotypes are the amazing and fascinating result of a new, entirely personal technique: Leunens' hands of a painter have forced the metal (aluminum) to react like oil color. The term monotypes was given to these works by Mrs. Mauquoy, curator of the Print Room in Brussels. Wrongly so, as we believe, because it suggests a relation with graphic art, which is totally absent. We would like to use a new specific name for abstract art works.

His inspiration is always nourished by his experiences as a worker-artist in Brabant, Belgium. There, during his days at the factory, he was fascinated by fire and metal. At night, these images haunted him during his creative efforts and it was then that the power of man over matter has finally pushed him to artistic triumph.

If one defines talent as the sum of technical skill and personality, Guillaume Leunens stands out from his colleagues like a demiurge: a predominant character, full of energy and self-confidence, borrowing his palette from the blast furnace. He has successfully given some of his vigor to his monotypes, which, with their subtle diversity, urgently demand to hold one's attention. They are the ultracontemporary manifestation of an original talent.
